Brighten up your rainy days with Topshop's corset waisted coral trench coat

coralts_coat.jpgIt's no secret that our Isabelle loves a bit of coral. Since Santa didn't bring her the beloved cape, she's still on the hunt for her favourite colour, and I think - given the dull and depressing weather at the moment - that good old Topshop may have come up with the goods.

Not exactly for the shy and retiring, this corset waisted trench coat is £65. Though obviously it would work with black or grey, it would also look amazing with chartreuse if you have the guts to really go for it! Think of it as fashion's way of sticking two fingers up to the rain!

Winter smart: chic coats

Wearing simple jeans and jumper feels so right in the January cold, but how do you keep a semblance of style? Pick a stylish coat and all will be fooled into thinking you are dressed smart from head to toe, Maurizio Pecoraro's cashmere swing coat is a dream, it looks chic but is simple enough not to look incongruous teamed with more casual clothing, down 60% at Farfetch it's still out of my reach at £648. Wallis' purple Jackie O coat is down to a mere £35, which is an unbeatable price for a statement piece. Mike and Chris' slouchy trench (£181.07) is casual and stylish, and will give a touch of effortless elegance to your outfits.

Star style: How to dress for the cold and still look chic

coldweatherdressing_stars.jpg[Images: Rex Features] - click image to enlarge

Being from the Antipodes, where winter tends to be more like the summers I have experienced here, dressing for the subzero temperatures of a London winter doesn't come particularly naturally to me. I'm not the best at layering, am still to master the skill of artful scarf-tying and am yet to acquire a masterful collection of cosy, ear-warming hats. It is at this time of year I am constantly spying on Londoners to get winter dressing inspiration. And I am also looking a bit closer at celebrities in the colder climes, to get ideas on how to keep warm without looking like a mis-matched marshmallow in a hat.

Some of my favourite looks in recent days have come from the stars pictured above. Read on to find out what each of their outfits has taught me - so we can all incorporate their chic-ness into our own cold weather dressing...

Checked coats to keep you cosy in the snow

checked_coats.jpg

There was snow on my driveway this morning. Actual, real life snow. It was very pretty for the three minutes it remained before melting, but unfortunately, with snow comes bitter, icy cold; the kind of cold that results in your wearing a coat in the office, trying desperately to type while wearing gloves.

No? Just us then! My point is, it's cold and that means coats. Lots of lovely, warm coats. These three checked numbers are available on the high street now if you've just discovered your Kate Moss for Topshop leather jacket is impractical when the temperature drops below zero. Go under the cut for details.

Top 10 fashionable gifts for under $100 on ShinyStyle!

10 under $100 1.jpg

Our American sisters in style have wrapped up $20 gifts under $200 and are on to the $50-$100 price range. The first thing they looked for? A fab coat for gifting to your favorite girl. We like this Gap plaid belted coat, on sale for $94.99, because the plaid can be a little holiday, a little preppy or a little indie depending on the giftee's style. It's a little something different for the girl who usually sticks to pea coats.

Check out the whole list here!

What to wear over those strapless party dresses

coverup_shrugs_boleros.jpg

The response to yesterday's Helen Mirren story about dresses with sleeves got me thinking about the proliferation of strapless and strappy dresses at this time of year, and the ongoing problem of what to wear with them to keep off the chill. Assuming you wear a coat to go in, you'll then need something a bit thinner and more party-like to wear after you've removed it.

While some super-stylish people can make a loose, men's cardigan look amazing over a strapless prom dress, others will need something a bit more appropriate. Luckily there are plenty of shrugs, boleros, capes and cardigans around...

Britney bounces back after the X Factor by wrapping up warm in Paris!

britney_duffelcoat.jpg

[Celeb image: Sipa Press/Rex Features]

Her X Factor performance may have been slated by the press (and the off-topic reply when talking to Dermot after set the alarm bells ringing) but there's no denying Britney Spears is looking better now than she has in a long time. As she fled to France following the Saturday night mime-fest, she looked her old self wrapped up in a cosy duffel coat and scarf. It's the first time in a long time that CQ's felt the need to emulate Brit. Get your own duffel coat from Gant for £299 (stockists: 020 7201 2900).
