After Kim and Laura raided the rails of Pop Boutique and The Loft, I swapped with our intrepid Aussie to check out the shoes on Neal Street for the second part of CQ Live London. Here's my exciting intro to the best shoe street in Covent Garden...
Vintage clothing in London is notoriously pricey so imagine how excited we were to discover the super low prices of vintage clothing at POP boutique. They sell a combination of reworked retro items and genuine pieces. Most of their stock comes from the US which is the cheapest way to get vintage.
If you’re a label lover but, like most of us, can’t afford the hefty price tag that usually comes with it then make sure to swing by The Loft the next time you’re in Covent Garden. This gem of a store is a haven for designer second-hand clothing which it sells for a fraction of the cost! In fact, we were assured by the store’s manager that every item is sold for 1/3 or less of its original price. Oh, and the labels….
Far from being the run down, grimy city some people seem to expect it to be, Birmingham is actually a fantastic place to go shopping, whatever your budget. But what Brum is best known for is its bargains. From the Rag Market to the huge branches of all the high street names that litter the main shopping area, if you’re a bargainista, this is definitely the place to be, as I found out as I returned to my old stomping ground, my Sony Vaio in my bag, for a spot of reminiscing and a lot of shopping. The first thing I stumbled upon? An urban beach with free wi-fi! There's something very rewarding about doing all of this with the feel of sand beneath my toes...
Portobello it is not, but if you’re looking for dirt-cheap bargains and a chance to really experience life as a Brummie, the Rag Market it definitely worth a visit. A little bit ramshackle but very, very cheap, It opens its doors on Tuesdays, Fridays and Saturdays, and sits directly behind the Bullring shopping centre, next to two other markets – the outdoor and the indoor (which is where you’ll find yummy food like fresh seafood, yum!).
Nipping into H&M following a good hour in Debenhams, I was surprised to find myself drawn to a massive display in the children’s department! They’re now stocking Sanrio Hello Kitty merchandise – and some of the items are great for (kitschy) adults as well as the under tens they’re aimed at. Cute little hairclips for £1.25, alice bands, handbags and my personal favourite, a pink knitted hat all tempted me from the rails. Sadly the kitty printed rain hat was too small for my big bonce, so if anyone knows where I can get an adult sized on, do share!
Like New Look, the huge Debenhams in the Bullring (filling four massive floors) is brilliant at sale time. The last dregs of the sale have now been put into rails organised by size, and if you know where to look you can snag limited edition Butterfly by Matthew Williamson maxi dresses for £40, Jasper Conran skirts for a tenner and floozie bikini tops for £3.
