London Fashion Week SS14: Tom Ford's Power Play
"She could snap your neck with her thighs!" are the words Tom Ford used to describe his SS14 collection when Vogue asked the designer backstage who his muse for the season was. "There's nothing more powerful than a beautiful woman."
A-List celebrities such as Cate Blanchett and Colin Firth joined fashion heavyweights like Natalie Massenet, Carine Roitfeld and Anna Wintour in the most luxurious setting of the week, with guests perched on plush sofas surrounded by calla lilies, mirrors, champagne and handsome Ford attendants. This wasn't a fanciful show just for the sake of it; after last seasons less-than-perfect performance, Mr. Ford came back to London Fashion Week to reclaim his crown as a showman obsessed with detail, detail, detail.
As Jay Z filled the speakers with 'Heaven' (perhaps the track 'Tom Ford' was too meta?) the show opened with a head-to-toe oak looks consisting of a wide shoulder crocodile biker teamed with matching mini skirt and a broad butter-soft coat. Then came the monochrome; models walked in ribbed white leathers, netted separates and oversized coats married with micro skirts for a more Spring/Summer feel.
After the animal skins and leather, intricate shimmering lacework came to play, as did the usual fur numbers, taking the form of bolero style jackets worn over sheer tops and paired with high waisted tuxedo pants. Short form fitting organza dresses covered in beading and ribbons were followed by powerful trademark trouser suits belted at the waist, and then something magical happened - sensational mosaic mirrored dresses appeared, worn with provocative lace up heels and jewel encrusted thigh high boots. We're betting Beyonce has her name on the list for one of those numbers...
