Fashion East gets playful with Bunny Ears, Stars Signs and Gary the Snail
As the likes of Natalie Massenet, Pixie Geldof, Harry Styles and Grimmy all cosied down in front row at the Topshop Show Space, it was time for London Fashion Week S/S 14 to truly, go out with a bang at the electric Fashion East. Famous for kick-starting the careers of Gareth Pugh, Louise Gray and House of Holland, we were only too excited to see what the initiative had to offer us this season round.
Remember playing dress-up in your grandma's wardrobe as a little girl? Well, Ryan must of because he got the look bang on. This collection was playhouse paradise as 80's tiered lace dresses with adorable, embroidered knitted cardigans skipped down the catwalk. Candy striped colours ticked us pink as they mixed with strawberry knits, polka dot chiffons and sheer cherry prints, dressed down with chiffon corsaged Converse. As we fell deeper into the little girl's dream, dolls houses were added as handbags and models were given springtime easter animal ears and painted faces. From piglets to playhouses this little collection was the definition of cuteness.
Horoscopes and Star Signs were the inspiration of choice for the dungaree wearing Claire Barrow as her illustrative, embroidered pieces were presented to us. Barefooted models wore unfinished, frayed dressed, trousers and jackets with illustrations of star signs, a little similar to the playful feel of Lanvin's Alber Elbaz. However, taking a step away from Lanvin things were punked up with oversized biker jackets and large earrings. We particularly fell for the painted, plastic rain macs towards the end of the collection.
It was Ashley William's resort wear that mixed chic, high fashion with her eclectic humour, as white box jackets and pleated denim were followed by reptile dresses printed with Spongebob Squarepant's very own, Gary the Snail. The fashion crowd were ticked further as Williams added 'dream boat' printed speedboat graphics onto shirts, jumpsuits and swimwear and accessoried models with classic Benidorm-style Nike sandals. Gorgeously chunky knits and interestingly cut dresses fell into the mix as Ashley proved she had the substance and the style for an incredible runway collection.
