Ahhh... the Opening Ceremony of the 2013 Cannes Film Festival, what could be more delightful? How about a gigantic downpour just as the stars step onto the red carpet?

Er, maybe not.

And yet that is exactly what happened last night at the premiere of The Great Gatsby. However not even rain could put a dampener on things as A Listers including Leonardo DiCaprio, Carey Mulligan and Nicole Kidman turned out in full force to kick off the glittering event. They, of course, were helped by a million attendants all running around madly with umbrellas. It was time to forget about the hair frizzing or going flat, forget the long trains being dragged along in puddles, this is Cannes goshdarnit no one, and I mean no one, was going to miss out on opening night. Even if it meant battling a thunderstorm in a hugely impractical gown and soaring heels. In hindsight, perhaps a raincoat and wellies might have been a better option.

Highlights from the red carpet included Kidman in a strapless, floral bell-shaped creation by Dior, Cara Delevingne in vampy black Burberry, and Cindy Crawford who sexed things up in a body-hugging Cavalli number. But already day one of Cannes brought to our attention a recurring colour theme. Various shades of red and pink were worn by Mulligan, Freida Pinto, Isla Fisher and Georgia May Jagger. I wonder how many more we'll see...

Psst! See what Carey, Leo and Baz wore to the Gatsby photocall earlier yesterday.
