Jessica Chastain in Armani Prive at the 2013 Oscars

Jessica Chastain was one of the first big stars to arrive on the red carpet at the 2013 Oscars, stepping out in a pale copper toned gown with clear sequins and crystal overlay that was a custom design for the Oscar nominee by Armani Prive.

Jessica described the gown as "a very 'happy birthday Mr President' dress" and explained that she chose it for its old hollywood appeal. So it's no surprise that she teamed the simple strapless gown with Harry Winston jewels, a classic old hollywood hair set, and bold red lipstick - the same look that drew comparisons to Jessica Rabbit when she did the same at the SAG Awards.

The ornate dress was probably the best fitting gown Jessica has worn all awards season, and what else would we expect of custom couture. The simple mermaid silhouette looked beautiful and the whole look was polished, vintage-inspired glamour at its finest.

But (and there is always a but) we can't help thinking this may be a sign of what's to come - stars taking the safe route, as we and many others predicted. We would have loved to have seen Jessica in a big dress, a bright colour or something a bit unusual or contemporary rather than this very tried-and-tested Oscars look...but perhaps if it ain't broke, you shouldn't fix it?
