awang79492650.jpgUPDATED 9am: WWD has now confirmed that the official announcement is due to take place on Monday.

Those Balenciaga rumours keep doing the rounds. Earlier this month it was Christopher Kane whose name was circulating, with Alexander Wang's name also thrown in the hat. Now it seems Wang is going straight to the front of the pack.

According to one of Cathy Horyn's contacts in Paris, Wang is considered to be the likely successor to Nicolas Ghesquière at the fashion house. Her sources claim a statement regarding Wang's appointment could be announced as early as next week.

Not long after Ghesquière declared he would be leaving Balenciaga a short list of potential candidates was compiled. This list is believed to have included Wang, Kane, Joseph Altuzarra, Bouchra Jarrar, and J.W. Anderson amongst others. A spokesperson for Kane has since ruled him out of the race but it has been reported that he has recently engaged discussions regarding possible funding for his own label by PPR, Balenciaga's parent company.

But back to Wang... Last year it was also rumoured that he would replace John Galliano at Dior. However he told reporters the only way he would consider taking on another design job is if were "completely different" to what he does already.

"Sometimes you don't get to say all you want to say in your brand," he said at the time. "When the right opportunity comes, it will present itself in a way that I'll be inspired by it. But right now, it's not like, 'Oh I'm after that house, I want to do that.'"

Who are you placing your bets on?
