Supermodels and the Spice Girls take over the London Olympics Closing Ceremony
Last night London said farewell to the 2012 Olympic Games in style. As previously reported, the event not only paid tribute to the remarkable sporting achievements over the past fortnight, it was also a chance for London to pay homage to its much celebrated music and arts history, this included fashion as well. Naomi Campbell, Kate Moss, Georgia May Jagger, Lily Cole, Stella Tennant, Karen Elson, Jourdan Dunn, Lily Donaldson and David Gandy all took to the stage to represent the best of British fashion. Their début began with eight huge trucks rolling around the stadium to the sounds of David Bowie. Each vehicle bore giant billboard images of each of the supermodels which were then were pulled down to reveal them inside. Dressed in a variety of glitzy designer ensembles, the models then made their way via the Union Jack shaped catwalk to the centre.
All models (except Gandy) strutted their stuff in sky-high heels. Campbell looked magnificent in a warrior-style gold metal wedding dress by Alexander McQueen. Moss was equally glittery in a floor-length gold sequinned gown also by the house of McQueen. Lily Cole made her mark in a gold brocade and lace dress by Erdem, Georgia May Jagger was a girlie sight in a flared-out frock by Victoria Beckham, and Lily Donaldson wore a scoop-neck Vivienne Westwood number. While Karen Elson wore a thigh-baring creation by Burberry, and Stella Tennant brought the masculine-feminine fierceness in a gold, silver and bronze chain-mail suit. Finally, Jourdan Dunn wowed the crowd in a feathered headpiece by Stephen Jones and a Jonathan Saunders gold leather dress as she accompanied Gandy down the runway.
Do you get the sense that gold was the major theme here?
But it wasn't just supermodels who brought the house down last night. The Spice Girls reunited for a special group performance which saw them arrive in a fleet of embellished black cabs. They burst out of the cars to perform a medley of their greatest hits. Dressed to the nines, the ladies looked fab in a variety of sparkly ensembles which included jumpsuits and figure-hugging frocks. Despite admitting to being nervous before the show (who wouldn't be?) Victoria Beckham managed to contain her nerves as she climbed onto the roof of one of the cabs in a pair of Manolo Blahniks and a black Giles Deacon corseted gown. Hats off to her, Mel B (in Zuhair Murad), Mel C, Geri Halliwell (in Suzanne Neville and Halo & Co) and Emma Bunton (in Maggie Cooke and Gina) for staying upright as the taxis circled the stadium at a rather fast pace.
After their performance Beckham took to Twitter to show her appreciation to her fellow band mates. "We did it!! I love u girls so much!!!!! xxx vb," she tweeted, along with the above photo backstage at the closing ceremony.
