Cape dresses entered our collective consciousness in a new and chic way when Gwyneth Paltrow walked down the Oscars red carpet in that minimalist white Tom Ford creation. Now it seems that they are really coming into their own at the Paris Haute Couture collections. Everyone from Giambattista Valli, Stephane Rolland and Alexis Mabille are showing dresses and gowns with capes attached.

Some are light and billowing, like the Giambattista Valli shown above right. There is an undeniable romance and old-world appeal to a cape. Some are much more minimalist and rendered in heavy fabrics that sort of conjure a Three Musketeers swashbuckling energy. Stephane Rolland showed a plethora of capes both long and shorter, as shown above right. Even the dramatic show-closing look included a statement-making cape.

Do you think cape dresses will ride the fashion high right on over into the next red carpet season or do you think they are mostly a runway, a couture runway concoction? We might have wondered about regular capes actually making it to the high street a few years ago and they certainly did, so shall the cape dress follow the same path?
