One of the most highly anticipated movies of the year, The Dark Knight Rises, hit the AMC Lincoln Square Theater in New York yesterday evening for its star-studded world premiere.

Whilst Christian Bale, aka Batman, opted for an striking black suit that Bruce Wayne would be proud of, leading ladies Anne Hathaway and Marion Cotillard chose to embrace the lighter end of the colour spectrum. With so many LBD's doing the rounds on the plush black carpet, it was almost a relief to see Hathaway and Cotillard move away from the darkness. I was particularly surprised and impressed with Anne's choice - you'd think after wearing a black skin-tight full body catsuit for months she might want to inject a little colour in her tour wardrobe, but the 29-year-old has worn so much black whilst promoting the latest Batman flick that I was sure she'd resemble her feline character for the premiere. Thank you for proving me wrong Hathaway!

The Devil Wears Prada actress looked stunning in a hand draped Prabal Gurung gown from the designers Resort 2013 collection. Featuring a gorgeous frilled peplum, low cowl back, and an exposed corset at the base of the plunging neckline, this dress is difficult to pull off, but I think Anne looks wonderful. The only thing letting the look down for me is the twisted straps. With so many other elements in the dress, I just can't understand why Anne's stylist would decide to bunch them up (they're supposed to look like this). What do you think?

Anne decided to let the dress do all the talking, keeping the accessories to a simple pair of diamond studded earrings and a silver bracelet. Thankfully her pixie cut has grown out a little too; it looks much softer and feminine now! I can't wait to see how she'll style it out. Finishing off her look with some seriously well-groomed eyebrows, a flash of coral blush and a pretty pink lipstick, Anne looked like the cat that got the cream!

Whilst Anne looked angelic in white, Marion Cotillard divided opinions in an ivory number that looked a little more Swan Lake than Haute Couture. The Fresh actress, who has scored an impressive number of magazine covers next month, wore a Christian Dior Couture dress with a ruffled tutu skirt and pretty, lightly beaded bodice. I'm disappointed that Marion decided to team the costumey dress with a pair of equally showy Christian Louboutin 'Lady Max' heels. These gorgeous celeb favourite shoes can really make an outfit, but unfortunately they did nothing for Marion's ensemble on this occasion.

Now onto something even more upsetting; that neon orange eyeshadow. Adding insult to injury, the usually beautiful actress was made to look as though she had gotten into a fight with a Crayola crayon on the way to the premiere - the only saving grace was a slick of gloss on her lips and a pair of dazzling Chopard earrings. A mismatching blue mani/pedi and a slick hairstyle completed the look.

9 times out of 10 I prefer Marion's style, but Anne really upped her game last night and has definitely made me think twice about which actress will work the red carpet best over the next few weeks.
