Keira Knightley in Anna Karenina trailer

Fans of costume dramas (*ahem* me!) are in for a real treat with the release of the trailer for Anna Karenina, starring Keira Knightley. The British actress has once again teamed up with Joe Wright, who also directed her in Pride & Prejudice, Atonement and the Chanel Coco Mademoiselle campaign, in this latest remake of the classic novel by Leo Tolstoy.

This two-and-a-half minute sneak peek gives us a glorious insight into the beautiful Russian world that Tolstroy created and that Wright has reinterpreted for the big screen. Keira plays the lead role of Anna, an aristocratic socialite living in 19th century Russia and stuck in a loveless marriage to Alexei Karenin, played by Jude Law, who appears almost unrecognisable. In this adaptation of the famous story, Anna goes on to have a scandalous affair with Count Vronksy, played by Aaron Johnson, inciting gossip and condemnation amongst her group of high society friends.

Describing it as one of the "hardest" roles she's ever had to play, from this preview I get a sense that Keira has really hit her straps with this part. Is she becoming the new queen of period films? "It was amazing," she said. "It was definitely the hardest thing I've ever done. In a brilliant way."

Anna Karenina is due to launch in the UK on September 7 and in the US on November 9. Squee! this makes it yet another romantic romp full of breathtaking costumes for us to look forward to. Along with Baz Luhrmann's upcoming adaptation of The Great Gatsby, it appears my cup is about to runneth over with costume drama love!
