Press day preview: River Island Autumn / Winter 2012 collection
River Island always delivers when it comes to press days - the team's styling and creative vision always makes it easy to pick out those pieces that are really going to make waves come August / September. For Autumn / Winter, the brand has pulled out all the stops with a series of fashion stories that cover everything from partywear to outerwear in typical Bang On Trend style (yeah, I said it).
Perhaps most exciting for us was the fact one collection was called Blogger. Guessing the online inspirations behind this look is not hard - this is about cyberspace's most eclectic style icons. To quote the press release "Organised chaos is the key to this freestyle look where anything goes." If you like clashing prints, mad textures, exaggeration and unexpected combinations, this is the range for you. Though truth be told, this blogger actually preferred the rest of the Autumn / Winter offerings!
Like Baroque, which split into two separate stories, one with a formal, rich black and gold palette with a touch of Eastern inspiration (loving the cheongsam evening dress and brocade dress with leather harness. The other side fo the trend is more Urban for daywear, pairing leather and wet look fabrics with Victoriana touches.
Futuristic Goth brings the Like A Prayer era Madonna look up to date with leather, silky slip dresses, velvet, lace and plenty of crosses and harsh accessories with spikes and chains.
For those who prefer something a bit more ladylike, Prim celebrates your inner Kate Middleton, but also carries the 1950s look into another season. Tweeds, boucle, pastel colours and touches of gold take the Chanel-esque look into colder weather. The accessories in this collection are a great place to start; look out for leather gloves, costume jewellery and fab fur stoles.
Finally, there's Downtown, your place to head for amazing masculine outerwear, swagger coats and punky tartan, and Scandi, for fab Topshop Unique / Burberry inspired coats and animal knits. A red fur gilet was a key item, and keep an eye out for killer blanket coats that'll keep you warm even in the depths of Winter.
All items will hit River Island stores for Autumn / Winter 2012 - so check from late August onwards!
