Zooey Deschanel opens up to Marie Claire about being bullied
With a face and a personality like hers it is hard to believe that anyone could think Zooey Deschanel was any less than awesome. But according to the actress this wasn't always the case. When she was aged just 12 years-old, she was "chubby" and made the target of bullies, one of whom spat in her face.
"I was ridiculed," she tells US Marie Claire. "I really don't know why she spit at me. I just talked to her. I guess I wasn't allowed to talk to her. I remember I couldn't believe it. Certainly you change, and you change perspective, you have other experiences. But isn't it funny - I can still remember when I was treated differently from the way I'm treated now."
Despite going on to lose 30 pounds, which the New Girl star says made everyone "all of a sudden" treat her differently, she has moved on from the torment she suffered. "I don't even know where [the bullies] are now."
Smouldering on the cover of the May issue of Marie Claire, Zooey also briefly acknowledged her current divorce from Death Cab for Cutie frontman, Ben Gibbard. When asked about her dating status, she says: "Honestly, I'm just going through a divorce, so I don't really think that's something I want to get into now. I don't have time to date. I literally - don't have time.'
The May issue of US Marie Claire goes on sale on Tuesday, April 17th.
