David Beckham is not only one of the world's most beautiful male specimens, he is also set to become UK Elle's first-ever male cover star!

The football star has made magazine history by posing for British Elle's July issue, which just happens to tie in beautifully with the Olympic Games (very clever!) Editor Lorraine Candy says it is the perfect opportunity to shoot a global icon "famous for both his style and athletic prowess."

"He is an icon and Elle is known for featuring icons on its cover. This is a first for us on the newsstand and I believe he is loved by men and women alike. Anyway, who doesn't want to see a picture of one of the world's most handsome men on the front cover of a magazine? It will be a collector's issue," she said.

Meanwhile Becks is just as chuffed to be getting his own Elle cover saying: "I'm honoured to have been asked to be the first ever solo male fashion cover."

It is true, while many men have tried none have succeeded in landing their own cover for the women's title. Ewan McGregor starred with Renee Zellweger on the November 2003 issue of UK Elle, while Liam Gallagher also appeared alongside Nicole Appleton for the January 2001 edition.
