Now before you start thinking to yourself, "geez, not another fashion reality show" (because I did at first) NBC's new series Fashion Star does seem to have quite a bit of star power on board as well as a few unique features, and one pretty major prize. The new game show style series is a combination of American Idol, the Victoria's Secret Fashion Show and Project Runway, and will première in the US tonight at 9.30pm ET.

It is hosted by Elle Macpherson, who is also an executive producer, and features a string of celebrity mentors including Nicole Richie, Jessica Simpson and menswear designer John Varvatos. The series offers 14 unknown designers the opportunity to a win a multi-million dollar prize to launch their collection at three of America's biggest retailers: Macy's, H&M and Saks Fifth Avenue.

Each week the designers will face elimination as they present their collection in a fashion show which has been based around a weekly challenge. What makes this show a bit different from the rest is that three buyers from each of the retailers will judge the collections and make on-the-spot decisions as they battle for the right to purchase the designs to exclusively stock them in their stores. One other point of difference is that at the end of each episode, viewers will have the opportunity to immediately buy the winning designs which will no doubt ensure it becomes a profitable little venture for both the unknown designer and NBC.

At the end of the series, one lucky designer will take out the overall Fashion Star prize which is $6,000,000 in orders for capsule collections at Macy's, H&M and Saks. Not a bad result, huh?

"This is about style and about buying and selling and about building brands," said Macpherson. "There's a lot of layers to the show." A preview of the show can be seen below...
