What a way to get remembered this fashion week season. Just prior to the start of the Balenciaga Spring/Summer 2012 show guests were forced to stand as three benches collapsed, making who sat on the front row seem rather irrelevant. Nevertheless the show must go on and so it did with editors including Anna Wintour, Carine Roitfeld and Suzy Menkes standing and watching.

The collection itself was a fusion of Nicolas Ghesquière's futuristic vision with revivals from Balenciaga's archives. Structure in boxy jackets with wide shoulders and made from various coloured shiny panels stole the show. According to the designer, the "very functional" concept was based on Cristobel's idea of the space between the body and fabric. Jackets were teamed with high waisted shorts, while there was also colourful printed satin blouses, and cropped tailored trousers. These led into space-age with helmet hats that featured super low brims (circa Balenciaga 1967) with fringed cellophane skirts.
