It was time for the floaty frothy gowns to enter New York Fashion Week when the Marchesa SS12 collection hit the catwalk on Tuesday. It was the first time we got to see Keren Craig and Georgina Chapman bring their exquisite pieces to life in a runway show. This gave guests a chance to see how these magnificent pieces of art move and work on the body.

Sticking to a palette of mostly white, nude, cinnamon and black, the pair presented layers of tulle, embroidery, draped organza, and sheer mesh. Supermodel Karen Elson opened the show in a tiered dress created from cascading silk fringe. As for their inspiration, the designers was influenced by nautical themes including the 19th-century Ilya Repin painting "Sadko in the Underwater Kingdom," and Ernst Haeckel drawings of tentacles and jellyfish.
