Chanel's sophisticated summer style for Cruise 2011/12
Cruising the French Riviera were the jet-setting starlet pack yesterday. They were in Cannes not only for the Film Festival but to scope out Chanel's Cruise 2011-12 show held in Cap d'Antibes. This collection was classy and chic, moving away from Karl Lagerfeld's previous free-spirited motorbike Resort offering which he showed in Saint Tropez last May.
Leading the sophisticated pack was Kristen McMenamy (who also stars in film to accompany the collection) in a black and white one-piece swimsuit and floaty robe. This was followed by a series of lavender and lemon Forties-style suits, which had a familiar ring to it. Perhaps Lagerfeld was inspired by the Queen's royal wedding yellow suit?
Speaking of what influenced this collection, Lagerfeld said: "It's about dressing down these very sumptuous looks, about easy elegance. This is about the women of Cannes, women who mix bathing suits with real pearls and diamonds. After all, you can't wear fakes into the water.'
And the gems were everywhere - including accessorised with swimsuits. Added to the mix were tweed blazers, bias-cut gowns, palazzo trousers, and chiffon gowns. Unfortunately I wasn't quite so sold on the midheel open-toe pumps which Lagerfeld dubbed his 'tango thong' shoes. But we'll see whether it catches on.
