John Galliano arrested and suspended from Dior
At 9pm Thursday evening, John Galliano was reportedly arrested by police for an alleged assault and making anti-Semitic remarks at a Paris cafe. The designer has been suspended as creative director of Christian Dior pending an investigation into the incident.
Galliano was reportedly detained by police after launching an attack on a couple sitting in a cafe while under the influence of alcohol. According to a police source: "We arrived extremely quickly and managed to break up the disturbance. The man involved [Galliano] was briefly arrested and then released pending charges for assault. Witnesses said he swore heavily, using anti-Jewish insults, before attacking a couple. Both have provided witness statements, as have a number of other people at the bar, including staff."
However a witness says the altercation may have not been Galliano's fault. "We had a table at La Perle and John Galliano sat next to us. He spoke to a couple at a nearby table to say "Cheers" and they insulted him. An argument started and the police came, so Galliano's bodyguard suggested that they should go to the police station to sort it out."
With Paris Fashion Week just days a way, and the Dior A/W '11 show set for March 4, it is unclear at this stage what will happen with these events. Likewise, the issue has also brought up questions over Natalie Portman, the face of Miss Dior Cherie and who is Jewish. She is expected to wear Dior to the Academy Awards this Sunday evening.
