Haute Couture Week: Jean Paul Gaultier Spring 2011
He is fashion's it-boy at the moment. Which is kind of ironic because yesterday Aussie model Andrej Pejic (above) was put in a wedding dress and sent down the runway for the finale of the Jean Paul Gaultier Couture Spring '11 show. It a strange way it was not a huge surprise since Pejic also walked Gaultier's menswear show and appears in the current ready-to-wear campaign alongside Karolina Kurkova.
But back to the show...
Using his punk roots, Gaultier presented a blend of edgy-meets-French-dancing-lady pieces for his SS11 collection. Each item was named such as "The Clash", "Belle Epoque", "Anarchy in the U.K.", and "La Goulue". Models with Mohawks traipsed the runway set against the voice of Catherine Deneuve announcing each look. Showgirl ruffles, tartan, layers of tulle and 3D embroideries took over.
There were strong silhouettes in sharp tailoring alongside long gowns with fishtail hems. Also in the finale was a Crazy Horse dancer who cancan-ed down the catwalk and entertaining the crowd.
