Leave it to Karl Lagerfeld to pull out the big guns for Chanel's Spring 2011 presentation. Backed by an 80-piece orchestra, Lagerfeld took over the Grand Palais in Paris was transformed into a contrasting black-and-white Versailles garden filled with marble fountains, and black hedges, inspired by the film Last Year at Marienbad, of which the costumes were supplied by Coco Chanel. On the catwalk were a plethora of Chanel's classic faux-tweed suits, served up in colours such as pastel yellow, pink and ivory, and bearing moth-eaten holes. Other distressed looks arrived in torn-up jeans, and frayed edges. There were also chiffon dresses, ostrich feathers, black lace eveningwear, and embroidery embellishments.
