Brushing off retirement rumours, Karl Lagerfeld claimed he "would die with his boots on" ahead of unveiling his autumn/winter 2009 couture collection for Chanel. Returning to his larger-than-life sets at the Grand Palais, Lagerfeld delivered a low-key collection (for him, that is) against four giant Chanel No.5 perfume bottles.

Loads of sparkle was injected into tweed suits, and floor-sweeping dresses that allowed panels to trail behind. Karl also played on shapes, which rounded out at the waist, allowing shower curtains of sheer fabric, lace and ruffles to fall down to the ankles. The finale saw Lara Stone and Baptiste Giabiconi play the part of bride and groom in all-white. They kissed for the audience as they disappeared inside a bottle.
