Following a lukewarm reception from critics for their début couture collection last season, Maria Grazia Chiuri and Pier Paolo Piccioli appear to have redeemed themselves this season. Valentino's A/W 2009-10 collection was strong on black lace, ruffles, feathers and gothic elements. There was more of the couture-staple tulle worn over barely covered legs, which brought the fashion house into the modern era. Loads of short dresses matched with Philip Treacy widow veils added the perfect touch of class, and there wasn't a hint of red in sight.
