Industry Interview: ASOS' Assistant Buyer Natalie
We've already snapped Natalie in CQ looking good at the IFB blogger meet up during London Fashion Week, and she kindly agreed to fill out our Industry Interview. For an insight into working at ASOS and getting into the fashion industry just read on...
How did you arrive at your current position at Asos?
After working for a couple of years in buying (toys not clothes!) I decided my heart was still in fashion. I did the Access to Fashion Business course at LCF and spent my Easter break doing unpaid work experience at ASOS.
When I finished my course in June, ASOS were just moving offices and recruiting more staff, it was definitely a case of right place right time! I was really excited to be offered a position as a Buyers Admin Assistant, since then I have worked my way up.
What advice would you give to people interested in fashion buying?
Get some work experience to get a foot in the door and find out what the industry is really like. And shop! It's really important to be commercially aware.
What was the most exciting/interesting thing that happened this week?
I've been to a lot of supplier appointments this week looking at great new fabrics for A/W. I love that my job takes me out of the office and it's always exciting putting new things into work. We will see the results in a few weeks time when we get the samples back. Since Fashion Week there has been a real buzz around the catwalks as the pictures appear and I've been keeping my eye on what the celebs have been wearing on the front row. I've also been photographed for the ASOS Community blog! Every week here is different and never boring.
Which trends do you think are going to be big in the next few months?
The 80s are back with a vengeance! Think Culture Club, colour clashing and bright prints for Summer. I bought my cycling shorts in January, I'm just waiting for weather warm enough to wear bare legs! Then for A/W the look is set to continue for with Grace Jones inspired structured shoulders and power dressing.
What are your fave items from the Asos S/S 09 collection?
There are some gorgeous crop tops in our S/S lookbook and on site now. I've also got my eye on some rose print jeans and a denim jumpsuit which are still to come. Roll on summer!
What are you wearing to death at the moment?
Checked shirts, brogues and jersey tube skirts. And my new Breton Stripe Crop Top.
What was the last book you read/album you listened to?
Last album was Ladyhawke and last book was the 2nd in the Twilight series, New Moon by Stephanie Meyer. I'm hooked!
