From our US fashion blog, ShinyStyle...

Here it is folks! The much-anticipated March '09 American Vogue cover starring Michelle Obama. It seems it was accidentally posted on WSJ's fashion blog ahead of its launch later today, and quickly picked up by Jezebel for our viewing pleasure (thanks peeps!). Photographed by Annie Leibovitz, there has been plenty of chatter already on forums about the portrait and of course the choice of outfit - a sleeveless magenta dress by Jason Wu.

Inside the issue there is an eight-page feature devoted to the new First Lady, in which she concedes that her wardrobe is now under intense scrutiny.

"I'm not going to pretend that I don't care about it," she tells the magazine. "But I also have to be very practical. In the end, someone will always not like what you wear - people just have different tastes."

Michelle was allowed to choose her own outfits for the Vogue shoot, which included Narcisco Rodriguez, who also designed that Election Night dress and J. Crew, a label favoured by her children.

"She doesn't need any help [choosing outfits]. She loves fashion and knows what works for her," commented Andre Leon Talley, who interviewed Mrs Obama. "She's never had a conversation with me about, `What do you think?' or `How did this look? And I'm glad for that."

It's as good as I expected. I'm surprised she chose Jason Wu again though. Why not give someone else a chance?

I love this. I think it looks comfortable. Safe, almost, but I don't think being on the front cover of Vogue is something she'd have ever expected.

She looks happy to be there. I'm not surprised she chose a designer she was comfortable in. She's not a model, she's not an actress, she looks like herself. She looks fab.

I love her! She's a modern emancipated woman who is comfortable in her own skin, definitely something to aspire to...
