We dipped a toe into the wet look trend last year, but now the Sass and Bide Black Rat leggings herald the arrival of wet look into the mainstream. Available from, worn by Mischa Barton, Kate Bosworth and even Russell Brand, these leggings became the 'IT' item of 2008.

Dresses may still be the choice du jour for many a yuletide reveller but judging by the streets of London this December wet look leggings have made it on the partywear radar as the thinking woman's alternative to party dresses. Instead of your usual frock why not go for wet look this New Year's Eve? Jump through for my diary as I try out the PVC Black Rats over the month of December.

Wearing the Sass and Bide Black Rats was a bit of a daunting challenge as I prefer to be a little more under the fashion radar and I was worried they weren't really my style but I was quite excited to give them a go.

The first day (pictured above, right) I opted for a ruffled top from Dorothy Perkins my beloved grey men's cardigan from Uniqlo and a pair of suede brogues from Sweden. The leggings turned a few heads on the way into work and as I bought a cup of tea at the train station the man in the shop asked me if I wanted a copy of Grazia which made me chuckle. The Black Rats turned out to be comfy, stylish and more edgy than what I usually wear so buoyed by my first try I was determined to wear them again. Unfortunately the next day I woke up late and couldn't face wearing anything more exciting than a knit dress and boots.

My second attempt was for our Christmas party and with Kelly sporting Topshop's sequinned leggings I didn't feel out of place one bit. I wore them with mushroom lace ups from Faith and a top from COS which was fairly simple and I felt really happy opting for something a little different for party season.

On the third attempt I tried to wear them in a way that fitted in with my own personal style, and not just go for a default look,so I wore them with a grey sweater dress, cardigan and a pair of flat pointed pumps with a floral bow belt to add interest (see first pic, left). By this time I was totally sold on the Black Rats, they were a little bit different to what I usually would wear but I loved the way they added texture and edgniness to my outfits and definitely turned heads wherever I went.

The Black Rats are not something you would necessarily slip on if you're having an off day or feeling low in confidence but it's great fun making the effort to wear something a little different into your wardrobe and the hard work certainly pays off. I'd thoroughly recommend ditching your dress this New Year's Eve and trying out wet look leggings, you can buy the Sass and Bide PVC Black Rats at for £130, or try the satin lycra pair priced at £93.
