carlabrunisarkozy_nudepicbag.jpgIt was pretty much an open-and-shut case, with Carla Bruni-Sarkozy being awarded 40,000 euros (£38,000) in damages from a manufacturer who distributed bags bearing a nude photo of her. The former supermodel sued clothing company, Pardon, over the misuse of her image, although she was seeking 125,000 euros (£118,000) in compensation.

The bag "neither justifies nor even evokes the benefit of any authorisation by Mme Carla Bruni for the use of her image in a promotional operation," said the judge.

Lawyers from the French first lady said that she would donate the compensation to charity. Pardon have said that they will appeal the court's decision.

"Forty thousand euros is a lot for a little bit of mischief," said the company's founder Peter Mertes.
