Do you Style Stalk?

Iso faceriser.jpgIsabelle writes...

Does your pace quicken when you spot a handbag you like on someone's arm? Do you crane your neck to try and catch a glimpse of someone's necklace? Welcome to the world of Style Stalking...

I've spent many a tube journey cursing the pot-bellied suit stood in front of me preventing me from seeing if a woman's belt is real leather or pleather. Style Stalking is at its most powerful when you've seen half of someone's outfit and you just need to see the rest well, just because!

I love looking at people's clothes and when you see something you like the impulse to stare, and then stare some more is unstoppable. Pleather accessories, cheap fabrics and diamanté can all ruin an outfit and to make up your mind on a look you need to see the whole thing.

When you're in the midst of Style Stalking someone decency goes out of the window, your head moves this way, that way, you barge past people on the footpath all to get a better look at the clothes. Once you've had a good gawp the clothes can then enter into your fashion subconscious, to be jumbled around with all the other items of clothing you've coveted and eventually spat out randomly like they've come out of a mental tumble dryer.

People on the street are amazing inspiration which is why Style Stalking is so great, with a bit of luck no one else will have noticed the way that teenage girl piles on bracelets and bangles, or the ultra-special nail varnish colour you just have to have. You can build up a mental shopping list of great things you've seen which more than makes up for all the restraining orders and strange looks...

I am a total Style Stalker. Lucky for me though, I live in an area where people are ultra friendly so it is easy to walk up to the person and ask about their outfit.

My bad habit is that I am also a Scent Stalker and have been known to try to secretly sniff out who is wear that wonderful smell and then ask them about it.

Guilty as charged!

For me it's the whole look but especially the make up and the shoes. I'm especially guilty as well of muttering out loud where people have bought their outfit from - which they sometimes hear! My friends are in turns amazed and disturbed by my actions and knowledge!

That's a great way to term it! I always thought I just liked "people watching," but really, I guess I am more of a "style stalker!" Strangers on the street are the best style inspirations! Especially when they pull off a very unique look with class, confidence and look fabulous!

I'm more inspired by everyday folk than celebs

I'm a style stalker, and I'm a hair stalker as well

I too am a style stalker--it tends to be mostly shoes that I notice. I've also asked someone what scent they're wearing--usually when we're standing in line for something. I find that most women are so flattered to be complemented that they most willingly give up any information about whatever's in question.

I do this all the time! I began to truly hate someone for having the Miu Miu bag I wanted once. I was on the bus and the incident lasted about 5 minutes but it was an emotional time!

So glad I'm not alone on this one! I'd say about 60% of the time I will ask someone where their clothes come from but shyness overrides a lot of the time.

I do hairstalking too, but scent stalking is a whole new world... Let's wear our restraining orders with pride!

OMG - I just realised I'm a jewellery stalker!!!
I design & make jewellery and when I see a gorgeous piece I find myself itching to get a closer look...How it it set, are those REAL stones, how does the clasp work...(it's a wonder I haven't been arrested as a potential cat burgler, lol)

You've hit the nail on the head Nicola! That's exactly what I do with clothes, especially when they're handmade.

I did so much Style Stalking yesterday on the tube and in town I'm surprised I didn't get whiplash.
