Zara overtakes Gap as the world's favourite retailer - Is it yours?

Zara_no1worldretailer.jpgThe retail world is buzzing with the news that Zara has overturned Gap as the world's number one clothing store.

How? Well due to an global expansion, the Spanish retailer has managed to reach parts of the world where others can only now dream.

It now owns 3,900 stores across 70 countries, and reported a 9 per cent increase in sales of £1.7bn in the first quarter of its financial year. It is the first time that Zara has been able to overtake Gap as the world's biggest retailer, with the American label hit by poor consumer spending.

This may, or may not come as a surprise to you, depending on how often you shop at Zara. So, do tell us - is it your favourite retailer? Leave your comments below.

You'd think they'd have an online shop by now!

I find it's a good shop for quality basics (cardis, jumpers, shirts and pencil skirts) for work but it's very rare I find trousers or dresses in there that fit me properly. The trouser lengths assume you're Giselle while the dresses NEVER have enough room for an ample or even a moderate bosom!

Zara is clearly designed with a Spanish aesthetic - petite, thin figures, towering heels and relatively dressy pieces in the collection. Their basics are great - quality winter coats, jackets, jeans, basic trousers, twin sets and cardis, slightly dressier tshirts. And I absolutely adore the sun-kissed hippy aesthetic of the TRF collection. So, is Zara my favourite international chain? Yeah. But I actually shop more at H&M - bigger selection, slightly cheaper, and more frequent sales!

I definitely prefer both to the Gap, though. Gap style strikes me as very lame J. Crew-wannabe dowdy suburban Midwest style.

At the moment, Zara probably is my favourite shop. I love their A/W collection, as they're doing a lot of the folk look, and I probably bought more from their S/S collection that I did from any other shop (most of it in the sale) Like the previous commenter said, they do have quite a Spanish aesthetic, which I find a breath of fresh air compared to the more or less identikit British high street.
