The 59-year-old was named in the New Years Honours, along with TV presenter Michael Parkinson, for his contribution to the retail industry and corporate social responsibility. Following the ceremony, he told reporters how Her Majesty wanted to 'know about M&S and how things were going.'

"I told her that running a retail business is tough at the moment. I don't know how long we're going to be stuck in this hole," he said.
