What is with this sudden need to bid ridiculous amounts of cash on model portraits, and immortalise them in sculpture? Naomi Campbell recently became the subject of a new sculpture by Nick Knight, and now it seems that Kate Moss will join her.
A solid gold sculpture of Moss will be unveiled in the British Museum's first contemporary sculpture exhibition. Created by artist Marc Quinn, who has previously immortalised the supermodel in white-painted bronze (pictured above), the latest artwork cost £1.5m to make.
Titled Siren, the piece belongs to the same series as his previous sculpture Sphinx, which depicts Moss in an extreme yoga position, first shown in 2006. So why choose the supermodel as his subject?
"She is a contemporary version of the Sphinx. A mystery. There must be something about her that has clicked with the collective unconscious to make her so ubiquitous, so spirit of the age," Quinn said.
The yet-to-be named exhibition is still in the early planning stages, and will feature works from an array of artists inspired by the British Museum's collection of sculpture.
