"I just felt I didn't deserve it," Karen Millen says of OBE
Designer Karen Millen has spoken of her joy and astonishment at receiving an OBE from the Prince of Wales.
"When I received the letter telling me about the OBE I was surprised and pretty gobsmacked," she admitted. "I just felt I didn't deserve it. I felt my ex-partner was more deserving than me."
Millen built her retail empire, which now spans 150 stores, with her ex-boyfriend, Kevin Stanford. The pair began the brand in 1981, with a loan of just £100 that was used to make clothes for friends. Despite this, Stanford accompanied her yesterday to Buckingham Palace where she was presented with the honour.
Dressed in a self-designed grey figure-hugging dress, Stella McCartney jacket and Philip Treacy hat.
"It's good for the brand, It's good for the charity work I'm doing now and good for the family - it's just a lovely thing to be acknowledged for," she added.
Millen celebrated her OBE at a star-studded party in Berkley Street last night.
