Barbara Hulanicki on the demise of Biba: "I think it's sad"

barbara_bibademise.jpgLast month we reported that Biba, which was revived in 2006, has fallen into administration. Now Barbara Hulanicki, the woman responsible for creating the iconic label more than 40 years ago, has opened up on its recent demise.

"I think it's sad," she told WWD. "Biba originally was straight to the public - it stemmed from a shop. The people who [took on Biba] aren't retailers - it's a different way of designing."

Despite this, and rather interestingly, Hulanicki didn't rule out working with Biba in the future, although conceded that another brand revival would be difficult: "[Biba] has been battered around so much".

Right now, she is occupying herself with new projects, including a wallpaper collection for Graham & Brown, and jewellery for the the V&A shop. She also has a fashion and accessories line, which is earmarked to launch later this year via a yet-to-be announced retailer. Exciting!
