Spring Summer 08 trends: Safari, the catwalk looks

safari1.jpg

Much like its nautical sister, the safari trend has a habit of showing its face at this time of year. A stalwart of designers creating looks for more mature women, the look has been sexed up for a younger market this season as designers like Proenza Schouler and Preen have added their unique touches to the look. Your standard basic is a pair of safari shorts, which are slouchier than the city shorts of old, thus bit easier to wear even if you're not model-slim. Go for Matthew Williamson's exotic take on the look if you're lacking in confidence, or show off your legs in Karen Walker's white version if you think you can pull them off...

Away from the key piece, the other way to attempt this trend is by dipping into the safari colour palette. Lots of designers used shades of taupe, beige, caramel, chocolate and khaki in their collections, experimenting with layers (like Proenza Schouler's sleeveless jackets) or fabrics (like Versace's silk shorts) to add a bit of individuality.

If you're not up to shorts or slinky offerings, there are plenty of semi-safari options for the more feminine shopper. Expect the high street to be chock full of structured shirt dresses like those from DVF and Jasper Conran, jersey pieces like those from Hermes and Donna Karan-esque full skirts.
