London Fashion Week A/W 2008-9: Paul Costelloe

Well we've popped the Autumn/Winter 08 cherry here at London Fashion Week with Paul Costelloe opening the madness for the sixth year running. Apparently there's some kind of superstition amongst the designers about going first being bad luck- but fortunately Costello is a good sport and not easily intimidated by bogus LFW curses.
Well we've popped the Autumn/Winter 08 cherry here at London Fashion Week with Paul Costelloe opening the madness for the sixth year running. Apparently there's some kind of superstition amongst the designers about going first being bad luck- fortunately Costelloe is a good sport and not easily intimidated by bogus LFW curses.
As you might expect from Costelloe, there was tweed en masse with that itchy yet strangely elegant fabric being used in a variety of garments, from full pleated skirts, to smart fitted dresses, to his signature trench coats. Talking of coats, you won't be struggling to find one to suit from Costelloe's collection- as well as the ubiquitous trench he's got military, cropped, equestrian inspired and pea shapes covered. To wear underneath he's touting floral print Chinese style dresses, swishy high waisted silk/satin skirts and blouses.
More directional, and ultimately my personal favourite, was the white on black scribble print used on (yes, you guessed it) coats and skirts. He also had a bit of fun with what I shall call "the shark dress"- a silvery second-skin frock with an intriguing "fin" collar design on the back. Nice to see commercial designer throwing a few new shapes.
The overall effect was ladylike, elegant, and (as you might reasonably expect from an ex-M&S designer) wearable. While his collection didn't exactly get the press whooping in the aisles, the assembled buyers looked busy making their shopping lists.
