London Fashion Week A/W 2008-9: Caroline Charles
Caroline Charles was the second show at the BFC tents on Sunday, and after watching the punters quaffing rose champagne (a bit too early for us!) we followed the crowd into the show area. Her show was split into six different sets, with themes ranging from 'Mood Indigo' and 'El Morocco' which brings to mind a dodgy restaurant more than a fashion show. First up, the 'Trophy Wife' section which was a selection up of brightly coloured pink or green suits with quilting, or belting details.
There were some pretty printed chiffon dresses styled with cardigans, trilby hats and wellies which reminded me of the '40s outfits in Atonement. Some of the low points were the printed velvet frock coats, beaded shell tops and a combination of the two, embellished velvet kaftans. Thankfully the live band managed to keep everyone's spirits up with classic jazz and swing tunes.
Seeing children sitting in front of you at a fashion show is one of CQ's big bugbears, but at this show, children were seen walking down the catwalk holding onto the models' hand. I was torn between finding it cute and finding it vom-inducing! Towards the end with the smooth jazz and time warp clothes we began to feel like we were marooned on a ghost ship. Nevertheless, you have to give the woman some credit for maintaining a successful business for over 40 years. The retro country looks I could see myself wearing but I think the embellished evening wear would have looked more appropriate on a Saga cruise holiday.
