CQ Reviews: The Meaning of Sunglasses

haddersbookpic.jpgFashion can sometimes be a lot of hype and little substance but no-one will burst the fashion bubble like Hadley Freeman. She has the unique quality of occupying a senior position in the fashion world (deputy fashion editor of the Guardian and contributing editor to Vogue, natch) and not being afraid to call a spade a spade, or a pair of Uggs "Ugg-by-name-ugh-by-nature".

Her first book (if you don't count the Victoria Beckham book she co-wrote) is "The Meaning of Sunglasses, A Guide to (Almost) All Things Fashionable", which reads like a compilation of the best bits of her humourous weekly advice column in the Guardian.

An A to Z of all things fashion no (Swarovski crystal) stone is left unturned as Hadders goes from Ruffles to Logos (the bleating of the insecure) and why Kate Moss ruined your wardrobe: "Fashion should be something that gives you pleasure; it should not be a logic puzzle to master every morning: 'Ok as I've got short arms I need mid-length sleeves, and, with the shape of my legs, I have to find a knee-length skirt'. It's getting dressed, not flipping Tetris"

It's a bit much to read all in one go as I did but trounces most style bibles by being both useful and a good read. Her lighthearted take on matters sartorial reminds you that first and foremost fashion should be fun: "fashion is literally just about dressing up. Kit yourself up like a late member of a minor European royal family or go for generic hippy -- six of one, half a dozen of the other, really." The book is out on the 14th February and will retail at £15.
