From the 21st of January to the 20 of July 2008, the National Portrait Gallery will host an exhibition honouring some of jazz’s hippest chicks and coolest cats. Photographer Walter Hanlon immortalises the 1950’s London jazz scene with rare images of musicians ranging from Sir John Dankworth to Cab Calloway.

Hanlon said: 'I am very pleased and excited that the National Portrait Gallery is showing a selection of my work, which can now be seen by a much wider public. The fifties were a stimulating time to be a photographer, and seeing these images again has evoked many pleasant memories. It was a privilege to be a part of that scene.' The showcase comes on the eve of the publication of Hanlon’s pictorial book 1950s Jazz in London and Paris. The cost of this exhibition…free. A piece of jazz and style history…priceless.
