I love a good cardie, they're great this time of year when you're slipping them on and off every 1/2 hour. In the spirit of finding the best cardigans I've complied my top five essential cardigans so you never need have a bad cardigan day again. My favourite cardigan is the shrug, especially when accompanied by a batwing sleeve as it gently warms the shoulders without being excessive and can be easily slung off. Another essential is the boytastic cardie, it looks great with girly dresses or jeans. Nick it off your flatmate/boyrfriend/brother or go to Topman or Uniqlo for one of your own. See after the jump for the rest of the pick and product links.

I might get slated for being an old lady for this but the beaded cardigan makes my list because it adds a bit of retro glam to every outfit. To avoid looking like the BHS sale rail in January keep it fitted and fluffy like this cardigan from Vintage Trends. The long cardgian is another staple, perfect for cold night in front of the TV and if you choose French Connection's cardie it's smart enough to add some warmth to an evening dress. Finally you can't go wrong with a colourful cardigan to add a dash of brights to an outfit.
Shrug, Oasis: £38. Boy cardigan, Uniqlo: £19. Beaded cardigan, Vintage Trends: $125. Long cardigan, French Connection: £70. Yellow kimono cardie, Topshop: £30.
