Uninspired - when the high street lets us down

640719172_l.jpg Luckily for me, having finished an arduous project and in the mood to treat myself I found myself on a shopping spree this weekend. But true to form, when you have the money you can't find the clothes.

I hit Manchester town centre like a kid in a candy store, as the cliché goes, and I'm afraid to say I came away all but empty handed. While trawling every shop on the high street like a girl on a mission, I drew no inspiration. So is it just me? I expected this to be the perfect time to shop, make hard decisions about which item to buy and then just have them both, and generally put my boyfriend through a little bit of hell along the way. It is pre-Autumn after all.

It may just be my penchant for things a little out of the ordinary and with touches of vintage, but I simply couldn't be inspired by anything I saw. Instead I wandered around the usual big names thinking how they could dress their shop rails better and (tragically) how this would serve as great research for work the next week! Finally, I indulged my personal shoe fetish with some gorgeous T bar shoes from Schuh, but I am a girl who never fails to fall back on a shoe purchase. Am I looking in all the wrong places?

Working for this site means I get to pore over clothes every day and drool excitedly, but when it came to me putting my money where my typing is I failed. Perhaps I'll save up for some designer gear next time. If I can.

So, I wonder ladies, does this happen to us all? Are you finding the British high street as inspirational as ever, or do you often go home empty handed? I might just put it down to the eternal curse of being able to afford everything I wanted for once.

i totally agree with you on this, but next time you happen to be shopping in manchester town centre go to afflecks palace! its a massive arcade type building, aside from some slightly more grungy shops they've got loads of vintage and more of the original type clothes you mentioned!

I'm with Caroline on this one: bring on the 40s inspired outfits and deep jewel purples! I've avoided the high street all summer due to complete boredom.

I am completely with u on this one too! I am finding nice pieces online, but not everyday. I went shopping on saturday, with my reddies & came away with nothing, do you think the internet is making us more open to lots of different things, and we are expecting a lot more from the high street, at least online we can avoid the sales & only see the new stock, not the case in stores, I can't stand the sight of a messy sale rail, I automatically plump for the new arrivals, because I have seen the sale stuff already & I always think if i didnt want to pay full price for the pleasure of not having to root, I definitely dont want it at hald price & have to rumage through.

Bring on the new stuff & send all the sale stuff to outlet village, thats what they are there for!

    I want new exciting stock!

I agree, i think the shops are still trying to make their money up from the dismal summer stock.

Maybe in a few weeks. Primark has got some great coats in, and Topshop has nice autumnal colours

I'm hoping that it's just the slump before all the proper A/W stuff comes in. But then I'll have spent my money on other stuff by then...
