London Fashion Week: Jonathan Saunders

When we met Diane Von Furstenberg on Sunday, she mentioned that the Jonathan Saunders show was one of the ones she would like to see whilst in London. And it's easy to see why this was a hot ticket. As of next season the designer will be moving across to New York to show his collection, and no doubt he'll fit in well with his modern take on classic chic, his beautiful colour choices and his form-fitting silhouette...

This season's collection was very much pared down colour-wise compared to the riot of brights he showed last time. Like many collections, the inspiration seemed rooted in the 80s, with dull pastels on a backing of black, beige and white. Waists were cinched with a variety of belts and bands, coats were full and cape like, and there was a nod to asymmetry, first with printed fabric sashes thrown over the shoulder and belted to the waist...

...and also on greyscale trimmed dresses and pleated waist detail on white dresses. Saunders showed a knack for smart chic, teaming sport-luxe (a key trend from the London shows) skirts with crisp white shirts covered in seam detailing, and later with the addition of a full-length t-shirt dress which cleverly sat on the line between casual and formal.
