H&M revealed as providing the worst customer service on the High Street

Last week Time Out London went undercover to report on the level of customer service available on the High Street, particularly focusing on Oxford Street. They also investigated whether your outfit choices affects the way shop assistants speak to you. Their study found that H&M was by far the worst offender, often not even having assistants available. At one point, when an assistant is asked for help finding a dress she replies with, "You're better off trying Bond Street." Topshop, on the other hand, did well and offered a high standard of customer service.

from personal experience, I would like to add how rude the staff are in H&M, Coventry. It was a while back, but I was in there with four of my friends, however we split into a two and a three as two of us wanted to look at jewelry and the other three at clothes, and we did not have much time to spare for the train. about fifteen minutes later me and my two friends returned to the front of the shop and out of the doors ready to meet our two friends, and five minutes later they emerged followed by security guards...

these security guards grabbed my friends by their coats and dragged them to the back of the shop with hardly any words of why they were doing so.

an hour later we heard from our friends and they reported to us that the security guards had been critical of them and that they were 'theives'. after searching their bags they obviously proved themselves wrong. however how rude of them to not have known for definate in the first place before humiliating them in front of other shoppers.

i know right, everyone makes mistakes?

this mistake is a bit of a BIG mistake to be made in front of a good queue of people though dont you think?

i am now working at topshop and in all my experience of shopping (trust me there's a lot!!) i have never met such a pleasent bunch of shop assistants and managers! that sounds so biased...

i've just stumbled accross this article in the middle of researching topshop customer service. i worked at h&m for a year before recently moving to topshop, which has always been my first choice! i'm a supervisor and department manager at TS and am about to start management training - this is within four months of being with the company. after a year of working full time at h&m i hadn't been offered any opportunity to progress which just goes to show the difference in company ethics! although there was a good team at my h&m store i was always aware of the bad management, poor customer service and shoddy garments. H&M doesn't care what its selling, just ship it in and sell it on! i'm proud to work at topshop and feel really encouraged and supported by the company, and customer service is always paramount.

God sorry Ella!! This was in Dublin though.. Maybe you'll get nicer superiors!

  • I don't know what to say... I've just been hired and i start work there soon. I'm kind of scared after reading what Hilary wrote.

I used to shop at H&M Cribbs Causeway in Bristol a lot and found the staff perfectly pleasant but in short supply. The queues were always miles long as there was usually only one person on the tills on each floor. And during the week there would be no one manning the fitting rooms at all, probably very helpful if you wanted to steal stuff! I've generally found Topshop staff nice and helpful, and usually dressed really well, in Topshop stuff, which helps to promote the clothes. Oh for a staff discount!
