The hooded top - wardrobe necessity or fashion crime?

hoody.JPG

I have a confession to make. My most recent purchase hasn't been a pair of Mary Jane style shoes, a gorgeous dress or a fantastic new coat from fashion mecca Net-a-Porter in preparation for next season. It was, in fact... a hoodie - or, as I prefer to call it, a (slightly less ASBO-esque sounding) hooded top. Not dissimilar to the unisex California fleece x-colour hoody available from American Apparel for £29 (left) or Topshop's purse-friendly £16 blue gathered pocket hoodie, I just couldn't resist buying another one 'just in case' - although 'just in case' of what, I don't know!

Where do you stand on hoodies? Are you quite happy in one or should they be relegated to sportswear and the I'm-too-ill-to-care-what-I-look-like-and-besides-nobody-will-see-me section of your wardrobe? Or, worse still, do they belong on the nearest bonfire?!

There's nothing wrong with hoodies. They are best worn either as sportswear, or round-the-house loungewear (in which context you might wonder why you needed the hood, but anyway). But I think they also look perfectly good with jeans.

I have loads of hoodies and I love them for when Im feeling in a slouchy mood or even when its raining and too windy for umbrellas. I dont see anything wrong with them especially as you can get some very form-fitting styles now that do not make you look like an asbo teen (something Ive never been accused of, even with my hood up!).

well i have a hooded dress, bought it in Topshop Boutique, the material is something that you wouldn't expect in something with a hoodie, I like it because is more casual than the other dresses that i have but it's still good enough to walk in the city.

I don't think they should be used for anything but sportswear, and taking out the rubbish on a chilly morning. And for heaven's sake, leave the hood down - you'll look like the unibomber! I'm horrified to see these things all over the place -paired with skirts and dresses no less.

  • Fashion crime unless it's Mike & Chris.
