Name: Laura “La Rue” Street
Location: London
Shiny Job: Editor (The Bag Lady) and Writer for Catwalk Queen and Dollymix

Background: I grew up in sunny, sunny Worcestershire and moved to London four years ago and haven’t looked back since! Got a degree in English from Brunel (which isn’t in West London, despite it’s claims) and studied for my post-grad at super hip London College of Fashion. I now live in West London with a pair of booze hounds whom I love dearly!

How would you define your personal style?
I think this is a hard question so I asked some of my friends. One said, “eclectic and varied”, another “occasionally bohemian” also, “effortless”. My favourite was, “versatile, you seem to be always wearing something to suit your mood” as this makes me sound like Karl Lagerfeld.

Where do you shop?
(I’m trying hard not to but) Topshop. French Connection, Oasis, Camden market, Terra Plana, Traid, Portabello Market, Office, Primark

Who are your favourite designers?
Ossie Clark is my all time favourite, Miu Miu (particularly loving a neopolitan coloured pair of brogues mmm), Sonia Rykiel, MCQ, Chloe.

Who are your style icons?
Rachel Bilson, Chloe Sevigny, Lou Doillon

What are your pet fashion hates?
Crocs! I’m also not about leggings and flats, sorry!

What five items of clothing / accessories couldn’t you live without?
Skinny jeans, belts, funky print t-shirts, flat ankle boots, and a black cardi.

What magazines / websites / newspapers do you read?
Vogue, Nylon, Dazed, Herald Tribune (gotta love a bit of Menkes), Sunday Times (well, just the Style mag actually), The Guardian

Share your big style secret with us!
Not really a secret but buying clothes that fit regardless of size. The sales assistants don’t care what size you buy it in and it ALWAYS looks better when clothes fit nicely. Also, steal your friends clothes!

    Hey Selina,

A bit of a non fashion related answer - I moved from the Brecon Beacons in Wales (as you can imagine there wasn't a lot to do there) to Brunel 5 years ago, and to be honest cried for the first 3 months. To this day I have no idea why I cried, everyone was friendly, I made great friends, I loved being so close to shops and not having to drive anywhere, but I think I was just overwhelmed with it all and missed my mountains! hehe

I went home for Christmas and was surprised that I really missed the place - I couldn't wait to get back there and have my independence back. I suppose sleeping in a bunk with your 10 year old sister as your bedroom is now a gym would make anyone want to move out! From then on I have to say was the best time of my life (how cheesy) but it really was, I would do anything to go back and be a student again!!

So I say go - even if you cry for 3 months stick it out as it does get better, trust me I know.

Oooh and also, Brunel was full of hot blokes when I studied Design there so that's a plus point ; )

  • hiya, bit of an unfashion-related question, but how was brunel? was the uni transition to a huge city a god thing? please help! i'm having a uni crisis!
