When I first saw this fabulous little coat from Miss Selfridge I immediately fell for it, but then I fell into the old trap - how on earth do you qualify buying a navy blue coat? Notoriously difficult to accessorise, this under-rated black alternative helped inspire this cute little outfit from Miss Selfridge. Perfect for daywear this autumn, with a little bit of French sophistication.

The dress in grey is perfect with this coat. It's neutral colour allows the coat to depart from the shadow of being an alternative to black and shine, while the shape perfectly compliments the silhouette of the coat. The neckline also allows a little bit of flesh to show when the coat isn't fastened.

I've accessorised this grey and navy combination with neutral chocolate browns including a pair of opaque tights and this oh-so-chic beret. The combination of the three neutrals, all often used as black alternatives, is a great way to wear tricky shades and gives a chance to be colourful without blinding. Perfect hues for autumn.
