(Not so...) Brave New World - wet look leggings

laura%20street.jpgI know I haven't done one of these for a while but this challenge was far harder than any other. I decided to try out American Apparel's wet look leggings, I have seen them on a couple of people and just thought, How hard can it be? How wrong was I?!
I selected two pairs of leggings from their Carnaby Street store, one lamé wet look pair (£28) and a shiny jazz tight pair (£21), both in black. I don't think I was prepared for the lamé leggings which I may as well have bought directly from a sex shop. American Apparel offer them in a range of colours including silver and purple, I am quite tempted by a silver pair as I saw a fashion editor wearing them with a long white shirt but resisted.

I was going to do what I always do with difficult trends and wear them for an entire day judging people's opinions as I went about my every day life. However, when I actually had a pair, in the flesh, I wasn't feeling quite so brave.

I tried them on in the comfort of my own home. I knew they were going to be pretty unforgiving but somehow overlooked how glaringly shiny they would be. It's also quite easy to overlook that they actually are an item of fetish wear.

I pulled them on and was surprised by how little stretch they actually have. This is so that they are as tight fitting as possible. I made them gather a little around the ankle to attempt to make them more flattering. You'd have to wear them with a long top otherwise I fear they'd be obscene.

You also have to be careful what you team them with them with as many things don't look quite right. Must avoid anything floral or too girly as even though it sounds like it would make a good contrast it just doesn't work.

When I was actually wearing them I realised that I couldn't wear them in public. My housemates (who said I looked like a lady of the night) tried to get me to go to the local shop in them but I just felt ridiculous. I really liked the shiny jazz tights, they were very flattering and would be so easy to wear. I guess they're not that different to regular leggings.

I couldn't face wearing the wet look leggings for a whole day. Aside from the weather which would make it far too hot to wear them, I just didn't have the guts. Essentially, I failed this Brave New World.

I don't think many girls will brave this trend, never mind get it right and look great.

Once the baby spat up on them, I'd look like Shamu...

Well, I think you're rock'in those leggings quite nicely. I would personally enjoy seeing you out in public in them.

hiya! i bought a pair from mango last season, and rather than wearing them in summer when your whole outfit is exposed, I wore mine under my knee length black swing coat with little heeled booties. this way they blend in with all the black, but look more fashion, rather than just jumping on the leggings in every shade and material bandwagon. i hope that helps? store them up for winter, i promise they'll be better then! x

It looks fab on you, I'm also quite tempted to get the Burgundy coloured ones from American Apparel.

I love the trend and I'm happy to see more and more sporting it. Well hey, I live in Heidelberg, Germany which is pretty small and pretty unstylish and unfashionable and I sport my real latex ones! I have to admit though that the ones from american apparel are much more comfortable and easier to handle. But with the right care and the right quality real latex ones will last forever...
