Traditional dress sizing to change to centimeters - what do you think?

dresssizing.jpgAn overhaul of dress sizing could be in the works if the European Union has its way. The Metro reports that traditional sizing methods such as size 10, 12, 14, etc could be replaced with bust, waist, hip and height measurements in centimeters. Frank Moore, head of the European Committee for Standardisation, told Which? magazine that the change is coming. "It could be the end of the old sizes. It will take some time to take effect but will mean better sizing for consumers. The sizing will happen on the Continent first and British shoppers will get used to it after seeing it there."

The proposed plan comes after it was discovered that a women's size 14 varied by several centimetres in different high-street stores.

According to the findings, a Dorothy Perkins size 14 bust measurement is 97cm compared with 93cm at Marks & Spencer. The news will surely come as a relief to many shoppers who may be a size 12 at one store and a size 14 at another or as Dollymix asks will this simply cause women to "run around with tape measures" wondering whether their hips will fit into the stock sizing?

Tell us your opinion. Do you agree/disagree with this new change?

Traditional dress sizing to change to centimeters - what do you think? - Comments

  • I have been ready for the new labelling since 1983, when my body measurements "went metric". I was 16 years old then. I was somewhat ready as early as 1975, the year of the Metric Conversion Act.

Good! About time! I was writing about the new sizing standard in my dissertation last year, and I think it's the best thing since sliced bread. Easier online shopping too!

As for "vanity sizing"... I always did think it was suspicious that I've got bigger over the last 20 years but my dress size has stayed the same! Some mistake surely :-P

"come on now, it really doesnt take that long to try on something before you buy!"

Not when you're me, and nothing ever seems to fit correctly. Even with no queues (hooray for the suburbs!), it can take me hours to find even ONE thing that looks flattering on me if I don't go to the store for a specific item (example, my usual jeans or a sweater), since I'm too big for regular sizes and too small for plus sizes. Measurements would probably be easier in my case.

    oh dear.

One one hand this is a very good thing. Clothes that may actually fit very well....

But on the other hand.... its going to be a pain learning your new size.... i know my hip measurment can fluxuate between 92cm and 100cm.....

  • no, no.

    far too complicated,

come on now, it really doesnt take that long to try on something before you buy!

it'd take longer looking for an item that satisfies not one but 3 size categories...
