L’Oréal criticised for Penelope Cruz mascara ad

penelopcruzlorealad.jpgWas Penelope Cruz really wearing false eyelashes in her latest advertising campaign for L’Oréal? That's the question the Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) has been investigating as the cosmetics giant comes under scrutiny for being "misleading". In the advertisements for L’Oréal's Telescopic mascara, Penelope Cruz promises "lashes that could reach for the stars" that was until one viewer picked up the actress wearing falsies.

"Penelope Cruz was wearing a few individual false lashes inserted into her natural lashes to fill in the gaps in her natural lashes for a consistent standard of lashes," L’Oréal told the ASA who, in turn, found the French firm to be misleading. L’Oréal have been ordered to put a disclaimer in all future adverts and to make it clear about the claim that the mascara increases lash length by 60 per cent. [source]

i find it a bit amusing that the ASA should choose this particular ad to pick on as in this day and age, it would be terribly naive to assume anything one sees in glossy adverts as in any way indicatie of what the actual product will acheive. Its not like nivea creams will make our faces as smooth as those modeling them ..we all know theyre selling their product by appealing to our pathetic attraction to the unattainable. All these ads are widely known to be heavily 'modified' in myriad ways so its franky quite ridiculous that this particular ad is being focused on. None of the products do what they promise and any idiot who actually bought the product beacause they actually believed it would make their lashes sixt percent longer need to have their intelligence tested. Advertising is all lies i think to survive in an age where consuming is practically religion, we need to be able to see through these lies and become awawre of what they try to do. Punishing loreal for misleading is useless unless we punish all ads that airbrush and promote false ideals and i dont think i need to elaborate on that. Sorry for the rant!
