One of the terrible things about living in a tourist hot spot such as London is that you never get round to doing any of the tourist things. There are so many museums and galleries in the capital that I have always meant to visit but somehow never got round to but this is an exhibition I will see.

The National Maritime Museum is hosting an exhibition entitled 'Sailor Chic' which looks at the role of nautical inspired items throughout fashion history. It opens on Wednesday (25th July) and runs until 2nd December (plenty of time to get down there) and is “celebrating the enduring influence of nautical styles on fashion”.

The museum will be showing traditional naval uniforms along side contemporary pieces from the likes of Chanel, John Galliano and Jean Paul Gaultier.
The exhibition is curated by Amy Miller who has just released a book about naval dressing entitled, 'Dressed to Kill' which looks at the historic origins of British naval uniform and its influence on contemporary fashion.
Nautical fashion is rarely off the catwalk. Spring/Summer 2007 has seen nautical inspired pieces by Jean Paul Gaultier, Luella Bartley, and Sonia Rykiel to name but a few. Vivienne Westwood often includes maritime influences within her collection.
The exhibition is open 10am - 5pm daily and admission costs adults £5, concessions £4, Under-16s are free.
