The weather may not have been ideal, but that didn't stop some of the country's leading footballers from tying the knot in a weekend wedding extravaganza. It was a WAG (Wives and Girlfriends) frenzy with four big ceremonies taking place over the weekend to mark the end of football season. England football captain John Terry kicked things off last Friday with his wedding to Toni Poole at Blenheim Palace. The lavish affair was kept under wraps and away from the paparazzi among reports they have sold exclusive photo rights to OK! magazine.
Three more couples followed suit with weddings from Manchester United players Gary Neville and Michael Carrick and Liverpool player Steven Gerrard. Finally, let's not forget Rod Stewart who reportedly wed his long-time girlfriend Penny Lancaster also on the weekend... crikey, the old hat definitely got a good working out!
With two of his former team mates getting hitched on the same day, David Beckham opted to avoid playing "choosies" and stayed away from both weddings to prepare for his last match. He sent a video message instead to Gary Neville's wedding to Emma Hadfield (Neville was best man at his wedding to Victoria). Neville's bride wore a full-length Amanda Wakeley gown.
On the same day Carrick married his childhood sweetheart Lisa Roughead who wore an ivory Christian Lacroix gown including ten foot train.
Finishing off the celebrations was Liverpool player Steven Gerrard who said "I do" to Alex Curran in front a celeb-studded crowd including Girls Aloud members Cheryl Tweedy and Nicola Roberts. Curran is said to have worn a £60,000 diamond-encrusted Elie Saab dress. OK! magazine has also reportedly purchased the photo rights to their wedding for £8,000, only highlighting further that celebrity weddings aren't just about making a commitment but also about making a financial return.
